Is co-managed IT right for your business?
February 27, 2023DirectWrite is a revolutionary technology developed by StorOne that provides data storage solutions with unprecedented speed, efficiency, and simplicity.
DirectWrite works by creating a streamlined IO pipeline directly to media bypassing the need for an NVRAM or RAM based cache. In fact, the optimized StorONE’s Storage Engine writes data at near maximum storage media potential speeds, eliminating the need for a write cache. The results are the highest level of data integrity in the industry without any performance degradation. While other vendors lean on cache as a performance crutch, StorOne’s optimized IO stack allows for over 80% of the native media performance without the use of cache. This translates into a simplified data storage architecture, higher reliability, and more performance.
Data Storage Benefits from DirectWrite
The benefits of DirectWrite are numerous and include:
- Direct Media Writes - StorONE’s IO software enables DirectWrite to write IO to persistent media first, protecting data from RAM or power failure.
- Simplified Design - High Availability in StorONE is simpler to implement and therefore less prone to issues caused by complex clustering topologies. Because there is no cache, there is no cache mirroring. The lack of mirroring accelerates write acknowledgements and removes risk of cache replication failures.
- Less Cost - Cache is expensive. The more data you serve on a data storage platform, the more cache required. DirectWrite’s lack of cache reduces the overall system costs, especially at scale.
- Data Durability Increased - removing the cache and writing directly to media removes the chance of data corruption and/or loss in the events of power or component failure, unlike with the use of cache.
- No Controller Performance Gating - Most other modern data storage solutions are performance gated by their controllers. Modern data storage controllers perform a variety of functions including data services, however, one of the most important, if not the most important function of the controller is managing and replicating the write cache. Removing the need for cache along with streamlining the data storage stack removes the controllers as a gating element. With StorONE, the controllers are traffic cops with the media providing much of the raw horsepower.
When is the last time you actually experienced a situation where less is more?
